Position Summary:This position is a Student Assistant C Labor Pool at the University of Alaska Anchorage.


Facilitate the integration of new students and families into the university; register new students for Howl Days; set-up and break-down Howl Days events; mentor first-time freshmen; coordinate and facilitate workshop sessions; document student contacts; assist with the development and implementation of new student orientation activities, i.e. skits, chant competitions, etc. General office duties, including answering phones, creating information packets, making etc. Provide campus tours and present university information for extended periods of time. Serve as a liaison between New Student Orientation and other departments, and other duties as assigned.

The office of New Student Orientation (NSO) has a dynamic team that welcomes new students to UAA and ensures a successful transition to college life. Our mission is to facilitate the integration of new students into the academic, intellectual, and social culture of the University of Alaska Anchorage in preparation for the university's educational opportunities. We are looking for outgoing students who recognize the value of this mission and have the enthusiasm and skills to effectively communicate with new students and their families.

The position is responsible for student orientation and related activities; scheduled orientation programs for all colleges and schools; supporting students through the first year of college; serving as a mentor to first year students; maintaining student records; documenting student contacts; coordinating and facilitating workshops; clerical duties and other duties as assigned.


Must be able to work with diverse populations; must be willing to develop leadership skills; must be an effective communicator and have the ability to demonstrate excellent customer service skills with new students, parents, and university staff/administrators. Must have an ability to take initiative; must be able to assist with the development and implementation of new student orientation activities. Must have networking abilities to serve as a liaison with various departments and resources off-campus; must be able to serve as an ambassador for the university; must have good writing skills; be able to lead, plan, and organize orientation program sessions.

To be eligible for student employment, an applicant must:

a. Be enrolled at UAA with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment or

b. Was enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters.

c. An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlined above to substantiate employment eligibility.

d. Must be in good disciplinary standing with the university.

e. A 2.0 grade point average or higher is required; 2.5 grade point average or higher is preferred.

Completion of one academic year at UAA is preferred.

Hourly Rate: $10.50
